Clonezilla - system backup tool

Creating backup of files is very important. It's handy to create from time too time backup of the operating system, in case that it will get broken for some reasons in the future.

Very useful tool for creating disk images is clonezilla, which can create image from various filesystems, including ext4. You can get the clonezilla ISO image from the link above (section Download). You can burn this image on a CD or create a bootable USB flash drive with the tool Unetbootin.

After you have your CD or flash drive, start clonezilla utility and follow the dialogs to create or restore your backup.

  1. first you have to choose your language (supported are English, Spanish, French, Italian and some Chinese)
  2. In the next step choose your keyboard settings (default is good for us)
  3. Next you will be asked if you like to start clonezilla or enter shell. Choose Start_Clonezilla
  4. In this step you can choose to create backup as an Image or clone to another HDD. Choose device-image to create an image.
  5. Next you can choose where will be the image created. On the local HDD (local_dev) or somewhere else over the network (ssh, smb, nfs). Choose local_dev.   NOTE: choose local_dev only in case you have created another partition where you can store your backup image. Otherwise you need to store backup over the network. Clonezilla also scans for exchangeable drives connected to the PC. Proceed with ENTER.
  6. The system displays all available partitions. Choose where you want to store your backup and choose directory (path) where it'll be stored. NOTE: clonezilla will in the given path create a directory with date and time in the name.
  7. Next choose Beginner mod and operation saveparts to store image from a partition or restoreparts  for restoring backup from inage.
  8. Here you can change the backup directory name.
  9. Clonezilla will now display available partitions from which you can create backup. Choose one hit ENTER and confirm with "y" to begin.
NOTE: to restore an image, choose the image file you want to restore and a partition where you want to restore it. Proceed. Confirm twice with "y".
Wait for operation to complete.
Compression rate is approximately 1/3 of the used space on your partition. The images are automatically split on 2GB parts.
